Designed in 2014, the LN Series LED suspended ambient luminaire features an architectural, sleek design with an indirect/direct lighting system offering superior ceiling and task uniformity and up to 90% optical efficiency. The LN Series delivers up to 110 LPW at 90+ CRI utilizing Cree Wavemax™ Technology with 3400 lumens at both 3500K and 4000K with 0-10V dimming or Cree SmartCast® Technology controls. Boasting a unique modular light engine for easier installation and design, the LN Series is perfect for both new construction and retrofit applications
One of the patented features of this fixture is the locking aluminum diecast connection joints between units. The fixture ships in 4' sections that can be easily plugged together without wiring and tightened allowing 12' spans between suspended drops. This feature allows for easy shipping and reduced SKU count as one fixture replaces what would have been dedicated 4, 8, and 12' SKUs.
This fixture was one that I worked on as the principal designer and engineer. I created the aluminum extrusions holding the driver electronics and creating the rigid strength center beam. This kept the fixture straight and from sagging between suspension points. A bolt and thumbscrew locking nut allowed for easy manufacturability and protected the 4' acrylic lenses from bending. You can see the yellow LED in the center notch in the lens. This waveguide technology minimized the quantity of less and spread the light up both wings.
The top aluminum extrusion had slides and keyed recesses to attach the hanging brackets used to suspend the fixture. It was designed to use off-the-shelf standard suspension kits but be flexible to allow for movement of the brackets if ceiling obstacles prevented 4' center drops. Solid end cap covers were provided to cover the connection and complete the look at the end of the fixture.
The four-foot acrylic panels on each side of the fixture were one large two-sided part. It was a custom optic designed at Cree and utilized a precise and proprietary manufacturing process. It evenly distributed light in an 80/20 (down to up light) ratio. That allowed for both direct downlight on task surfaces and room ambiance up light. The need for this bi-wing design to be protected and cradled made the design for this fixture very challenging. It turned out to be a very modern and sleek design, that balances well with similar architectural and elegant spaces.
