Emergency Lighting Unit

Ground up Redesign of ELM Family

From 2000-to 2004 I was a Lead Mechanical Designer on the next generation of commercial lighting products. This consisted of ELM, ELM2, and the larger wattage ELM6. This product was combined into one base housing that could be converted into several products for easier manufacturing and a more streamlined appearance. At the time, the previous generation and most of the competitors were very blocky with poor lighting control and difficult installation.

Innovative and Lasting Design

The "Quick Mount" features allow the back housing to be roughed in with the electrical during building retrofit or construction. Then after the rooms have been painted and are ready for occupancy, the building maintenance team can come back and with one snap, the rest of the housing attaches and goes "live". Saves in unit damage from construction and theft before the building is ready to be occupied.

Some of the other features of this classic design are:

  • 25% smaller compact aesthetic
  • Snap-fit design allows for rapid installation
  • Adjustable, rotating, high-quality optics
  • Optics that deliver up to 100% more light on the paths of egress
  • Easy to see and reach the test button on the front.

Rounded MR-24 Lamphead

Swivels in two directions for more flexible targeting of light where you want it. A predecessor to LED, this lamp could take multiple styles of lighting making upgrades or different SKUs easy.

This entire product line consisted of nine separate plastic injection molded parts, and dozens of other items like stamped aluminum reflectors, custom sockets as well as custom electrical connections. At the time this family contributed over 9 million dollars in annual sales. While this model is no longer being sold, the design and aesthetic are still in service today, but with updated LED lighting. This product has been one of the largest sellers for Lithonia Lighting over the past twenty years and I was proud to be a part of it.
